Cataract
Surgery
Cataract surgery is a surgical treatment in
which the lens inside the eyes are removed because they have become cloudy due
to reasons like an eye injury, aging or any other reasons. In most situations,
the cataract surgeon removes the original lens and replaces it with an
artificial lens implant also called as intraocular lens, or IOL. This surgery
helps in restoring the patient’s vision and remove the need for thick glasses
after surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed medical
procedures in the world.
Types of
Cataract
- A person may suffer from any one of the mentioned 3 types of cataracts:
- A nuclear cataract is found in the center of the lens, the nucleus can be commonly seen as it forms and this cataract is caused due to changes in the protein structure.
- A cortical cataract begins on the outer part of the lens and slowly extends inside to the center. A common eye problem with people suffering from diabetes.
- A sub capsular cataract starts at the backside of the lens. People who suffer from diabetes, retinitis pigmentosa, high farsightedness, or those taking high doses of steroids are at high risk of getting this type of cataract.

Cataract Surgery Procedure
If vision is not restored with prescribed spectacles, then an eye
surgery is required to replace the clouded eye lens with clear artificial lens.
Cataract surgery procedure is an outpatient treatment that requires only 15-20
minutes. The surgeon performs the procedure called phacoemulsification under a
local anesthesia or sedative drops. It is performed by making a small incision
on the side of the cornea of the eye. Then a small device is placed into the
opening of the eye which produces ultrasound vibration and breaks the eye lens
into small pieces. These fragments are later cleaned by suction. The surgeon
then inserts an artificial implant called intraocular lens and replaces it with
the natural lens. The intraocular lens can be made of acrylic, plastic, or
silicone with a suitable optical power. The process is referred intraocular
lens implantation.
Recovery from Cataract Surgery
Depending on the type of cataract surgery you underwent and your eye
condition, post-surgery recovery requires minimum of 1 month. After a month, a
final review for spectacles/eyeglasses is done. The eye may still continue to
heal even after this. Heavy and strenuous activities should be avoided although
you can perform your daily activities normally.
