Hip Resurfacing Surgery Procedure
A
hip surface surgery normally lasts for 1-3 hours. A small incision will be made
in your thigh so that your surgeon is able to reach the hip joint. The femoral
head is later removed out of the socket. After this the head is trimmed with
specially designed power devices. Now, a metal cap is attached over the ready
femoral head with cement-like material. The tendon/cartilage that outlines the
socket is detached with a control tool called a reamer. A metal cup is then
pushed inside the socket and held in place using friction of the bone and the
metal. Once the cup is in the right place, the femoral head is moved back into
the socket and the incision is sealed. After the surgery you will be shifted to
the recovery room, where you will be carefully monitored by nurses and after
few hours you will be shifted to normal room.

The
common risks of hip resurfacing are similar to traditional total hip
replacement surgery. These include bone dislocation, infection, nerve injury,
blood clots, and additional bone formation around the hip that could make the
hip stiff.
Recovery From Hip Resurfacing Surgery
In most
resurfacing cases, patients may go home after 1 to 4 days post- surgery.
Depending on the bone strength your Doctor may advise you to put weight on bone
and try standing. You may require a walker, cane stick, or crutches for the
initial days or few weeks until you are comfortable enough to walk on your own
without any support. A physical therapist may be required who will instruct
some routine exercises to help maintain your bone strength. You will visit your
orthopedic surgeon for regular follow-ups to keep a check on the recovery
process. After about 5-6 weeks you can resume to your daily activities.
